A Brief History of the Company

In the Summer of 2021, Kevin and Cindy Sullivan and their son, Stephen, were looking to do something different.  Kevin had been a chemist with a major pharmaceutical company for 32 years before accepting early retirement in 2018.  Cindy was trained in a variety of fields but enjoyed Public Relations and Healthcare work more than the rest.  Stephen earned a Bachelor of Science in Piano from the University of Indianapolis in 2013, and went on to earn a Transition to Teaching certificate in Choral and General Music in 2017, from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Except for Cindy, the Sullivans had been around Music and Music Education for a long time, going back to previous generations, though only Stephen was the most advanced of the current living relatives, having graduated from the University of Indianapolis in 2013 with a degree in Piano (Bachelor of Science).  Argyle Nohr, Kevin's grandfather, had performed with the Lawrence Welk group before they became well-known on national television.  Kevin's natural mother, the late Virginia Rae, had once been a highly-skilled violin player in her younger days.

Music runs in the family, to say the least, and a combination of things convinced the Sullivans, formerly of Greenwood/Indianapolis, Indiana but in southeast Indiana since 2019, that something different could lead to better times for the region, especially Scottsburg and Scott County, where a number of historic and current challenges had left many residents with few healthy ways of expressing themselves and working towards their goals, at times.  Despite a combination of setbacks and massive successes, the family behind Moxie Music Center, LLC is proud to remain at 24 S Main on the Square in downtown Scottsburg, Indiana.  In fact, the company will soon be growing and relocating to a more fitting location by August 1st.  Moxie Music Center, LLC is more than a Music Store and Music Center.  It is a Center for anyone, musical or not, and our mission reflects this each and every new day.  Our customers, support system and employees help make it possible and rewarding for us to do what we do here, and for that we are also grateful.

A new chapter in the history of our company began in late July and early August of 2025, when we left our old location at 24 South Main in Scottsburg, and moved up to 1515 N Gardner Street!  We're still in Scottsburg, however, and are located a 5 minute drive northwest of the old location.  Our contact information remains the same except for that.  The new building has more room, among other amenities.

Employees (as of July 2025):  Kevin (Trumpet, Ukulele, and Early Guitar Instructor), Cindy (Communications/PR), Stephen (Piano, Voice, Theory*, and Early Guitar Instructor), Bruce (Drums/percussion Instructor), and James (part-time Store Cleaner/Assistant Building worker).

The Moxie Difference

Just when it seemed like brick-and-mortar stores were a thing of the past, in a region seemingly out of The Twilight Zone, one brave family, the Sullivans (formerly of Greenwood, Indiana) saw a need to build something totally out there (in a good way).  After consulting with local partners and sometimes associates, the Sullivans felt called to start a Music Store with Character.  Sure, we sell quality guitars, basses, ukuleles, and other things of music, but our number one mission is to be a genuine enterprise of faith, family, and community.  Sometimes we succeed, and sometimes we don't, but we are the Music Store with Character because we always strive to leave those around us better than we found them, not because they might have a new, used or consigned instrument, not because they might take lessons here, but because of the potential we noticed when we opened in 2021.  The area we serve has seen its fair share of setbacks, addiction issues, and a host of other unfair things, yet still we believe.  We carry that with us each day.  We were Located at 24 South Main Street on the Square in historic Scottsburg, Indiana (47170), but moved to 1515 N Gardner Street in Scottsburg as of August 4th, 2025.  We're open Tuesday thru Saturday, from 12:30 to 6pm.  Offering Instruments, high-quality music lessons, event collaboration with the community when possible, and a genuine commitment to leaving the community better than how we found it, we are Scottsburg's premiere Music Store and Community Center.  Our efforts strive to reflect this.  Feel the difference...the Moxie difference!
